Wine Tourism: Culture and Tradition in Every Sip from the Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol boasts five distinct wine areas, differentiated by terrain and climate: Serranía de Ronda, Axarquía, Montes de Málaga, North Zone (Vega de Antequera), and Western Coast.
These regions produce high-quality wines protected by two designations of origin: Málaga (for sweet wines) and Sierras de Málaga (for still wines).
Opting for wine tourism here is an excellent choice. We present a selection of unique experiences that are rich in history and tradition due to their wines.
Bodega Nilva: A Viticultural Jewel in Southern Europe
The vineyards of Bodega Nilva, perched on the Pampanito de Manilva slope, are notable for being the southernmost in Europe, producing an exceptional dry Muscat white wine.
They offer guided tours with vineyard tastings. They also collaborate with Estepona’s Marine Tourism, organizing onboard tastings with fresh local market products, and provide the opportunity to sponsor a vine, contributing to the wine tradition of the Western Costa del Sol.
Underwater Bio-Winery: A Pioneer in Andalusia
Escaramujo Wines is the first company licensed to mature wines underwater.
Aging them 20-30 meters deep results in creamier and more complex wines. Their bottles, created with marine organisms, are exceptionally original.
Moreover, they offer boat trips for tastings at sea and oyster tastings, as well as on-land tastings in Estepona.
Mediterranean Experience at Bodega Quitapenas
Bodega Quitapenas in Torremolinos is the perfect place to enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and excellent wines on the Costa del Sol. Offering a variety that includes Muscatel, Pedro Ximénez, homemade vermouth, and champagne cocktails, the winery provides a refreshing and original experience. Beyond enjoying tapas and dishes, visitors can relax with beers and wines in a cozy atmosphere, while taking advantage of the region’s exceptional climate. With the opportunity to witness sunsets and stroll along the beach, Bodega Quitapenas promises an unparalleled gastronomic and social experience in the Mediterranean.
Exploring the Cradle of the Melonera Grape
Bodegas La Melonera stands out in the Serranía de Ronda for its commitment to the research and recovery of native varieties, such as the melonera grape.
This winery offers tours showcasing the artisan cultivation and winemaking process, as well as tastings of three wines, including the emblematic melonera grape.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore the vineyard, learn about the winery’s history, and enjoy a cold appetizer with local products.
Málaga Virgen: One of the Oldest Wineries on the Costa del Sol
Málaga Virgen is one of the oldest wineries on the Costa del Sol. At its Vista Hermosa estate in Fuente de Piedra, they grow varieties such as Pedro Ximénez, muscatel, verdejo, chardonnay, and syrah.
During the visit, guests can discover the different aging processes that result in a wide variety of wines, from sweet to red, and also learn about Brandy production.
Wine tasting takes place in La Sacristía Room, where the oldest century-old barrels are kept, and is complemented by high-quality local products, endorsed by the Sabor a Málaga brand.
Bodegas Almijara: Winemaking Tradition in Cómpeta
Located in the Axarquía, Cómpeta offers a perfect environment for cultivating the Muscat of Alexandria grape.
In this region, Bodegas Almijara stands as a symbol of the deep-rooted winemaking tradition. With traditional cultivation methods and the use of sun-drying, essential for the characteristic sweet wines, farmers work hard throughout the year to produce the renowned “moscatel wine” of Cómpeta, which has been emblematic for generations.
Bodega Antonio Muñoz Cabrera: Dimobe Wines
Bodega Antonio Muñoz Cabrera, home of Dimobe wines, is located in the heart of Moclinejo, near Plaza de España. In three rooms, it displays the evolution of winemaking in the Axarquía since 1927.
The first room, a museum, exhibits ancient tools such as a 200-year-old press, an old wine press, and a laboratory. The second room, the winery, contains machinery used in the latter half of the last century, including a hydraulic press. The third room is the press, equipped with modern macerators and steel tanks.
The winery offers oenotourism activities, such as visits, tastings, and events.
